NSW: Union calls for workplace investigation into truck smashes

SYDNEY, April 18 AAP - Truck crashes should be investigated in the same way as workplaceaccidents, a union said today.

The call from the Transport Workers Union (TWU) followed a horror smash in Sydney'swest yesterday that killed two men.

TWU state secretary Tony Sheldon said unless the deaths were treated as a workplaceaccident, the number of people killed on roads would not be reduced.

"If two people had been killed in an accident on a mining site ... WorkCover wouldhave attended the scene and immediately commenced an investigation," Mr Sheldon said.

"Truck drivers are not second class citizens and should be entitled to the same rightsand protections as other NSW workers.

"Unless WorkCover seriously starts these types of investigations into fatal accidentsinvolving trucks, then we are never going to be able to reduce the number of people beingkilled in truck accidents on our roads."

The two men killed yesterday were passengers in a car which collided with a truck carryingearthmoving equipment about 4.30pm (AEST) at the intersection of South Street and RichmondRoad, Marsden Park.

A crane had to be called to the scene to lift the truck off the car so rescuers couldreach the two survivors of the crash, who were both on the driver's side.

Two other men were seriously injured in the smash.

A police spokesman said the two men who died were in their mid-20s and a report wasbeing prepared for the coroner.

Comment was being sought from WorkCover.
